Are the Blue Mountains on your bucket list? Wondering how to get there and back? While there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ form of transportation, some options are certainly more convenient than others.
Throughout this article, we’ll share some insights into why the Blue Mountains are a must-visit, how to get there, and what’s on offer when you join an OzTrails day tour.
Before we dive into transport choices, it’s worth reminding ourselves what makes the Blue Mountains such a special place.
Just a short journey from Sydney, this World Heritage-listed region is home to deep valleys, dramatic cliffs, eucalyptus forests, and iconic landmarks like the Three Sisters. You can walk through an ancient rainforest, take in jaw-dropping views from lookouts, ride the world’s steepest railway, and snap stunning photos all in one day.
Throw in a few charming villages, great cafes, and hidden waterfalls, and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect escape from city life.
Travelling from the Sydney CBD to Katoomba, located in the heart of the Blue Mountains, generally takes around 90 minutes (1.5 hours) by car, bus, or Uber/taxi. Of course, this will depend on traffic, time of day, and road conditions.
By train, you’re typically looking at somewhere around 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, we still don’t have high speed trains here in Australia! So, if you’re travelling from Europe, Asia, or an area where high speed trains are the norm, definitely keep this in mind!
Let’s break down a couple of your best transportation options now!
Blue Mountains bus tours remain one of the most popular and convenient ways to explore the region. It’s no surprise why. From the moment you hop aboard, everything is taken care of, so you can kick back and focus on enjoying the journey. It’s also great if you’re new to the country and aren’t that familiar with the roads!
What makes bus tours so appealing? For starters, they’re stress-free. There’s no need to worry about parking, navigating winding mountain roads, or keeping to a tight schedule. You’ll be picked up from Sydney, whisked out to the mountains, and guided around all the top attractions without lifting a finger.
With Oz Trails, you’ll also learn all about the Indigenous significance of the land (including certain rock formations), get insider tips on the best lookout spots, or even enjoy a few laughs thanks to your driver’s colourful commentary.
You’ll also get to cover more ground. Bus tours are designed to maximise your time, taking you to a mix of popular icons and lesser-known gems that you might not discover on your own. There’s often a carefully curated itinerary that balances walks, sightseeing, and photo ops.
Plus, the social side is a bonus. Whether you're travelling alone or with friends, sharing the journey with other travellers can lead to good chats and great memories.
Feeling a bit more independent? Travelling to the Blue Mountains on your own by train is certainly doable and can be a rewarding experience.
Sydney’s train network provides a direct link to the mountains, with regular services to Katoomba and beyond. The journey takes just over two hours, and if you grab a window seat, you’ll enjoy scenic views as you leave the city behind and enter the bush-covered hills.
Why go solo? For many, the appeal lies in the flexibility. You can choose your own adventure, start and finish when you like, and decide on the pace that suits you. It’s perfect if you want to linger in one spot, duck into a cosy café for a long lunch, or take your time exploring a particular walking track.
While you can arrive to the Blue Mountains by public transport, the main problem is moving between the different places you want to see and visit. Some of them are kilometres apart. After a rewarding bushwalk in one location, you don’t want to spend your time and energy walking on the road to the next lookout or the next good bushwalk. This is why transportation is essential, especially for a short time visitor!
One of the best things about joining our award-winning Sydney Blue Mountains Day Tour is that the itinerary is packed with must-see destinations, giving you a well-rounded taste of the Blue Mountains in a single day. You’ll get a mix of natural wonders, local charm, and memorable experiences without the stress of figuring it all out yourself.
Here are some of the sights and sounds we’ll explore together!
No visit to the Blue Mountains is complete without stopping at Scenic World. It’s one of the region’s biggest attractions and for a good reason. Here, you’ll have the chance to ride the Scenic Railway, the steepest passenger railway in the world, descend into ancient rainforest, and glide across the valley on the Scenic Skyway or Cableway, taking in 360-degree views of cliff faces, waterfalls, and the vast Jamison Valley below.
Scenic World is a thrilling but safe way to experience the dramatic landscape up close. Whether you're walking the forest boardwalk or floating above the canopy, it’s one of those rare places that’s equal parts fun and awe-inspiring.
Katoomba is the heart of the Blue Mountains and the main hub for most visitors. It’s where you’ll find Echo Point, Scenic World, and a good portion of the area’s history and character. A stop in Katoomba gives you a chance to get a feel for the local culture. There are quirky art galleries, heritage buildings, and street murals, along with a strong connection to the area's Indigenous and colonial past.
Whether it’s enjoying the panoramic views, grabbing a snack, or soaking in the mountain air, Katoomba gives the trip a proper grounding. It’s also the best base for accessing many of the area’s lookouts and walking tracks.
Just outside Katoomba lies Echo Point, the lookout that frames the famous Three Sisters rock formation. This is probably the most iconic view in the Blue Mountains, offering sweeping vistas across the Jamison Valley and beyond. The site is rich in Aboriginal significance, and your Oz Trails guide will share the Dreamtime legend associated with the Three Sisters, adding cultural depth to your visit.
You’ll have time to take photos, admire the landscape, and learn how this spot came to symbolise the entire Blue Mountains region.
A short drive from Katoomba, Leura is a charming village known for its boutique shops, flowering gardens, and old-world atmosphere. The high street is lined with independent cafes, artisan bakeries, and little nooks selling everything from handmade chocolates to vintage books. It’s the perfect lunch stop, and Oz Trails gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to come back and spend a full weekend here. It’s that kind of place.
Depending on the day and conditions, you may also get the chance to visit Wentworth Falls, one of the most breathtaking walking spots in the Blue Mountains. The falls tumble over a high sandstone ledge into a valley below, and the surrounding walking tracks offer unforgettable views.
Oz Trails often includes a short guided bushwalk to a lookout or waterfall, giving you a chance to experience the peaceful side of the mountains and get a taste of the area's natural beauty on foot.
The day begins with a visit to Featherdale Wildlife Park or Sydney Zoo, where you can meet some of Australia’s native animals. Get up close with kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, and more — a fun and educational experience, especially for international visitors.
