So what’s in a name? The town of Leura in the Blue Mountains

The town of Leura approximately 100 kilometres from the Sydney Central Business District and is situated in the upper Blue Mountains region. It sits next to the main town of Katoomba and the town is 985 metres above sea level. Leura Mall ( town centre ) is filled with cafe’s restaurants, antique shops, gift shops and the main street is divided by a median strip, lined with cherry blossoms. No one really knows the origin of the name, “Leura,”some say it was derived from an old aboriginal work meaning “lava,” yet volcanoes have been extinct in Australia for at least ten million years? The mystery only adds to the mystique and beauty of the town.

It only takes a few minutes to walk from one end of Leura Mall to the to the other, however, the town centre offers a lot. A day trip to the Mountains wouldn’t be complete without spending some time to enjoy a nice, leisurely walk through the town. The residential areas surrounding Leura Mall is home to English-style gardens, a throwback to the early English settlers that moved into the area in the 1800’s.
