Designing the Ultimate Blue Mountains Day Trip Itinerary

The Blue Mountains, located just outside of Sydney, is a natural wonder that has captivated visitors for decades. With its deep gorges, steep cliffs, and breathtaking lookouts, it’s no wonder that this region has been designated as a World Heritage site. Known as the 'Grand Canyon' of Australia, the Blue Mountains offers an unforgettable and awe-inspiring experience to all who visit.

Planning a day trip to the beautiful Blue Mountains takes some thought, especially if you want to make the most of your time there. Luckily, we’ve compiled a simple guide to point you in the right direction.

Before You Go: What to Bring Checklist

When planning a day trip to the Blue Mountains from Sydney, it is essential to pack the right items for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Below you'll find a helpful checklist of what to bring along:

Comfortable Clothing: The weather in the Blue Mountains can vary throughout the day, so it's recommended to dress in layers. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that can easily be added or removed as needed. It's also recommended to wear comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the various trails and lookouts.

Sun Protection: The sun can be quite strong, so don't forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays. Additionally, you can also consider packing a lightweight long-sleeved shirt or a scarf to cover your arms and neck if needed.

Water and Snacks: Water and food are essential when spending a day outdoors. Make sure to bring plenty of water or a hydration pack to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Additionally, pack some snacks like muesli bars or trail mix to keep your energy levels up while you're sightseeing.

Camera or Phone: The Blue Mountains never fails to deliver breathtaking views and stunning landscapes that you won't want to miss capturing. So, make sure to bring a camera or use your phone's camera to capture those memorable moments and beautiful scenery!

Umbrella or Raincoat: Whilst it is cooler in winter there is more rainfall during summertime, so it’s recommended to bring a light raincoat and/or umbrella.

Top Spot: Kings Tableland (or Lincolns Rock)

A brilliant introduction to the wonders of the Blue Mountains, this lookout is one of the best places to view the NSW wilderness. Kings Tableland, located near Wentworth Falls, is a popular spot for nature lovers and photographers. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the valleys and cliffs that make up the Blue Mountains.

The vast expanse of wilderness stretches as far as the eye can see, with hues of blue and green creating a stunning colour palette. Kings Tableland is also known for its abundance of wildflowers.

Next, Wentworth Falls

The Wentworth Falls track offers bushwalkers stunning views of the valley from Fletcher's lookout and leads to the top of the popular Wentworth Falls waterfall.

This brief yet steep hike from Wentworth Falls picnic area is absolutely worth the effort. Follow the flat pathway past Jamison and Wentworth lookouts before descending around 200 steps to reach the stunning cliff-edge viewpoint of Fletchers lookout. Take in the breathtaking sight of the waterfall that lends Wentworth Falls its name, as it cascades 100m down to the valley below.

From there, it's only a short walk down to the top of the Falls, where Jamison Creek flows into a shallow pool on one side and the majestic Jamison Valley stretches out on the other. You can return via the same route or extend your adventure by continuing for a minute along National Pass to soak in exhilarating vistas and marvel at this remarkable engineering marvel before retracing your steps back to the picnic area.

For the ultimate experience, a guided bushwalk to one of the most spectacular lookout points in the Blue Mountains is recommended. Oz Trails offers Sydney's best Blue Mountains tour – call 0411 288 805 to secure your spot!

It's Time to Hit Leura

Nestled east of Katoomba on the fringes of the Blue Mountains National Park, Leura is perhaps the most picturesque village in the entire region. With charming heritage homes, locally owned shops, stunning cool climate gardens, and a town centre recognised by the National Trust, it's no wonder Leura is so captivating for visitors. The streets, adorned with cherry trees, also create a captivating sight, especially during blossom season.

On To Katoomba Falls

Katoomba is the centre of the Blue Mountains and the gateway to its two most popular tourist attractions: The Three Sisters rock formation and Scenic World. It's brimming with heritage walks, world-class views and waterfalls.

Marvel the Three Sisters Rock Formation

This famous rock formation and local legend is experienced by millions of people each year. The Three Sisters is essentially an unusual rock formation representing three sisters who according to Aboriginal legend were turned to stone.

The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and throughout the seasons as the sunlight brings out the magnificent colours. Each of the Three Sisters stands at 922, 918 & 906 metres tall, respectively – that's over 3000 feet above sea level!

At Oz Trails, we respect and appreciate Aboriginal history and culture and want to share our passion with you. Take one of our Blue Mountains tours to learn about Aboriginal rock engravings and the First Nations people, thought to have arrived in the Blue Mountains thousands of years ago.
