How Far is the Blue Mountains from Sydney?

Due to Sydney’s urban sprawl, the Mountains essentially lie on the doorstep of the Western Suburbs. Both Penrith and Jordan Springs, for example, are just a short distance from this beautiful, World Heritage listed region of NSW.

The Blue Mountains are approximately 100 kilometres west of Sydney’s CBD, making them an easy day trip destination from any corner of the city. Travel times will also vary depending on your mode of transportation. 

By Car: Driving from the inner suburbs of Sydney to Katoomba, the heart of the Blue Mountains, typically takes around 90 minutes. Of course, this will always depend on the time of day and the amount of traffic. Once you arrive, this option gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.

By Train: If you prefer not to drive or don’t have access to a vehicle, a train ride from Central Station to Katoomba takes roughly two hours. Trains are comfortable and offer scenic views along the way, making the journey itself part of the adventure.

What’s more, the slightly cooler mountain climate provides a refreshing escape from the more intense heat and humidity of Sydney. 

Autumn (March - May)

With cooler temperatures in the range of 10°C to 24°C, Autumn is an ideal time for hiking and sightseeing. The landscape is particularly stunning as the foliage changes to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. This is typically a quieter time in the Blue Mountains and there can be fewer tourists. As a result, it tends to be a more relaxed and peaceful experience than other peak times. Winter (June - August)

During this period, we normally experience temperatures averaging between 6°C and 15°C. While the weather is chilly, the crisp, clear days also provide excellent visibility for the breathtaking views. This season sees fewer visitors, so if you prefer a more chilled and laid back experience, winter is certainly a great time to visit. Just make sure to dress warmly and don’t forget to take a break at one of the many cosy local cafes or restaurants.

Spring (September - November)

Spring is the wettest season in the Blue Mountains, with average temperatures ranging from 9°C to 23°C. Despite the occasional rain, this is one of the most beautiful times to visit, as the region really comes alive with vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery. With fresh air, spectacular views and milder temperatures, spring is perfect for enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings. It's also a great time to visit Scenic World and participate in various festivals and events!
